Reefer and Temperature-Controlled Freight: Questions to Ask Your Broker

Moving temperature-sensitive food? These are the questions that protect your product, and the information a broker needs to quote a reefer load properly.

By Bever Logistics Group · Updated 2026-10-14

Start with the product, not the trailer

A reefer quote starts with the commodity and the temperature it must hold. Chilled produce, dairy, frozen food and pharmaceuticals each have different handling needs, and mixed fresh-and-frozen loads need a specific review of product compatibility, equipment configuration, packaging and food-safety requirements.

Information needed for a reefer quote

  • Commodity and packaging
  • Set-point temperature and acceptable range
  • Pallet count and total weight
  • Origin, destination, pickup window and receiver hours
  • Any monitoring or record requirements

Questions to ask before you book

  • Can the carrier hold my set point, and is the equipment suitable for the commodity?
  • Will the trailer be pre-cooled before loading?
  • What continuous monitoring is available, and can I receive temperature logs or reefer reports after delivery?
  • What happens if the reefer unit alarms in transit, and who do I call?
  • Is weekend pickup or delivery available if I need it?
  • How are delays at the shipper or receiver handled, including detention?

Real tracking, honestly described

Monitoring capability varies by equipment and carrier. Bever Logistics Group confirms the available monitoring and reporting arrangements for each load before booking, and shares tracking links where tracking is available. Update frequency depends on the assigned carrier and tracking system, so ask for the specifics for your shipment.
